Ed Winkle, over at Hymark High Spots, asked me recently how I got folks to comment on my blog. Other than the old advice to be sure to comment on theirs in return, I didn't have much to tell him. There doesn't seem to be any way to predict when people will comment, or what will catch their fancy. Some posts that are off the cuff draw scads of comment, while other well-thought-out and decently-written pieces draw almost nothing. Some weekends and holidays seem busy and comments take a dive, while others must be more leisurely and folks have a lot to say. Recently, the traffic to my off-beat little blog has been up considerably, yet comments are down. I can't figure it out. Any ideas? BTW, you should check out Ed's blog; he's had several good posts that caught my eye lately. I can't comment on his last one, though, since I have no experience with the matter.

It happens to me too.
Gorges, I follow Ed's blog and do post the occasional comment but my old fashioned ways of farming don't always match up with his modern methods. Plus blogger sometimes won't co-operate and let me post a comment. I don't get a lot of comments on mine although I know there are a lot of "lookers". It seems you need to say something controversial or inflammatory sometimes to get a reaction.
Sunday Blessings Sir Gorges'!
Thanks for the link to another cool blog.
i have family in Ohio...forgot to tell Ed though...Oops!
i'm still struggling to get Blogger to let me do stuff.. like replying to comments..i start to figure it out then..WHAM! the bug man sprays the Nieghborhood and i can't think strait. So..we ARE looking at becoming full time Boondockers now.
Thanks for commenting on my blog and encouraging me..it means alot!
Blessings & Buzz'z
You inspired me to go comment on Hymark Hyspots so I owe you one too. As a reader, not a blogger I enjoy your blog and others, but for me I usually can't think of anything worth saying. Don't get discouraged by lack of comments. I for one read everything you post.
controversial issues always seem to draw comments especially those where beliefs are deep and divided. abortion and gay marriage are examples of this.
tragedies is a good comment draw too.
of course it is also nice to have a regular who may see things in a different light than you helps start a good thread.
basically, it has been my experience that any post that stirs up the emotions of a reader usually draws comments. i think that is the key.
btw, took your advice on the theme of my blog.
Sometimes you say it so well, a comment seems superfluous.
I reckon it probably does to every blogger, Wolfdancer.
I know what you mean, Ralph, there are blogs that I read everyn day, yet Blogger rarely lets me comment on them. I think you're right about the contraversial stuff.
Blogger is a pain, kare, but I know that I'll lose a lot of my regulars if I go to WordPress.
Thanks for your attention then, G706. As you might guess, though, it IS an encouragement to the blogger if he knows that his readership hasn't dozed off! ;-)
I guess Ed and I are just going to have to go "edgy" then, Griper! BTW, I feel sort of bad that you felt that you needed to change you theme, but it really IS lot better for these old eyes of mine. Thanks!
I know what you mean, Penny; sometimes my greatness overwhelms even me! ;-)
I will go and check out Ed's Blog. if people don't comment its not the end of the world. The thing is, like a diary you have exposed your heart and allowed others to view inside. Some will agree and some not..But you got it off your chest and thats healthy.. I sometimes write things I think are so silly, or just what interests myself. But, its all a showcase of me..A nutty 'roo from under the world somewhere.
Gorge.. I have found trouble trying to comment on your blog. It takes 2 or 3 attempts and then finally the comment page shows up. Some days I just don't have the time to keep trying.
Hard to say what the folks will comment on! I have a couple of folks that comment regular as clockwork, and then I have some that only comment once in a while!
I'm always pleasantly surprised when I get a new follower! Thankful, but surprised!
Let's face it! We do this mainly for ourselves anyway!
My advice is to always come up with a clever title...not that I do, but it's the title that draws me in. I browse the favorites and go for what interests me.
We may do it for ourselves, but I'm not sure I'd keep doing it if nobody read it, Crystal. Of course reading and commenting are two different things!
B&V, I have trouble with that on about a half dozen blogs, usually the same ones. Plus, one guy here in town has no luck commenting on mine, so I know distance isn't the problem.
That's true, Jim. I figured my atheist piece would get more comments than this post.
I think you're onto something with the title, SfyS.
Cat Got Your Tongue - caught my fancy
Now that ya got your fancy, DeanO, what ya gonna do with it?
