Waiting - 1937 Flood

-

I suspect the men are waiting on a raft coming downstream from somewhere. Whatever is on the raft, goods or people, will probably be put on the wagon and hauled overland to town by farm roads along the ridges, bypassing flooded county roads. The horses and wagon are sitting on the same spot as the car in an earlier photo. At first, I thought there was only one horse and wondered why the wagon had a tongue instead of shafts, then I noticed that the horse had eight legs.My grandparent's home was just to the left out of sight, sitting on a bank a few few above the water. When at its highest, the water came to the back steps, lacking only four feet of elevation or so of being in the house. It's several feet lower at this point.

I was so hard back then. Now we get warnings (we are on them now) and we know what ahead.I can't imagine floating on a raft down a flooded river.

Some of our Queensland highways are cut off with floods right now. Please keep Peter in prayer, he is driving in it.

I guess folks did what they had to, Crystal. The first prayer has gone out for Peter. More will follow.

Times were really hard back then,no way to be prepared for what was coming, but these people met their problems head on,with hard work and ingenuity,so in many ways they were always prepared. Blessings Jane

That's a good photo.. times sure were different back then.. We lived across a creek and it was quite wide and when it rained alot the creek would get out of banks and we couldn't cross the little footlog for days on end.. even had to miss school quite a bit.. can'r imagine how it was for a lot of folks.. We forget how much easier times are now. Life was so tough back then.

We're definitely "soft" these days, Jane.

I lived on a hill, Susie, but school was on the other side of the water sometimes. DARN, I hated it when that happened! ;-)

Better people, I think though, CM.

The Ohio River got to 80 or 81 feet today in Cincinnati in 1937. I called Uncle Roy to see what he remembered. He said it flooded almost every year back then before flood controls but that was the worst, Pittsburgh was worse the year before. This one flooded from Pittsburg to Cairo, Illinois. I might write about that tomorrow. How do you get so many comments? I can't beg for one but mine is hard to leave comments on, not sure if it's how it is formatted or what.

Apparently, Ed there was a flood in '36 that was actually worse in SOME areas. Most of my comments come from folks who have blogs where I leave comments, but I know some blogs ARe more difficult to leave comments on. In fact, there are a few where I CAN'T comment. I think it's something wrong with Blogger itself.
