The "Big House" at Speed, West Virginia 1945 (pic)

My mom's family moved around some when she was a child. Two of those places were at Speed, WV. One was a tiny little house, the other was the craftsman bungalow that you see here. She called it the "big house," by comparison. Here is a photo of it, probably from 1945. It sits along Route 21 between Spencer and Charleston and is still standing. The little house was the second one up a hollow on a gravel road, a slight distance behind this one. That's "the Speed church" on the left of the photo. Click the image to enlarge it slightly.

Do they still build houses with those wonderful big front porches? Haven't seen many lately. Nothing better than to sit out on the front porch in the cool of the evening.

Back porches seem more common these days, Vicki, for those that have ANY. I'm a dedicated porch-sitter, myself!

It looks like a really cute place. We have a great front porch, in fact 2 porches and we use them all the time. The old place had a backyard deck and screened in porch and although I miss the screened in porch, we never really saw anyone sitting out back. Now we know when anyone is passing by.

Love Craftsman style homes! They were sold by Sears. I miss sitting on a front porch and stoop.
