The “bell” rang for me at 5AM this morning, meaning that the missus felt that The Mighty Dachshund needed to go out. Usually it’s because the pooch has told her so, but not always. Once in a while she just stands in the grass looking at me as if to say, “Why did you make me come out here?” This morning, she made a moderate drain, so I suspect that she was bored and just wanted to go outside. So what if it involved waking me up? That’s what I’m there for, servant that I am.
I always “case the joint” before stepping out and my flashlight beam showed the young doe and her fawns bedded about 60 feet away, just beyond the back corner of the back deck. As we went out the door, I was greeted with the sound of a cricket choir around the lawn and a barred owl in the hollow. We returned and took our porch-sitting positions with the doe and fawns still in place. It was quiet--not much noise from the distant four-lane and no traffic on the county road. Every once in a while I could hear the leaves of the trees rustle a little. The temperature has been comfortable at night lately, even though the days are still hot for this time of year. Still no rain, though the weatherman keeps threatening it. The moonlight was pretty.
After a half-hour, the missus came and told me that we needed to come in so she could get back to sleep, as she can’t sleep for fear of the boogeyman getting us as long as we’re outside. As I went in the door, I flashed the light toward the back of the house and saw the doe and her youngun’s hadn’t moved a bit. Guess they’re enjoying the moonlight as they chew their cud.
