Ewwww!

-

I realize that some things are probably overdone in the livestock feed business, but I have to laugh when I hear do-gooders get all spastic about chicken feed containing animal by-products. They act like the little beasties should eat only pure, organic grain harvested under a full moon. Obviously, they've never seen chickens on the farm eat bugs, worms, frogs, snakes and dead stuff. But, they'll turn around and talk about how good those "natural" eggs are! Ignorance truly is bliss, I guess. ;-)

It is fun watching three or four chickens surround a scorpion and try to peck off the stinger and when that happens it is a full MMA fight match between them to get to the scorpion first. I have watch them guzzle down medium sized rattlesnakes and when we would get the occasional locust swarm would eat until the flopped down and couldn't move. Pain in the backside to gather up fat chickens before dark to coop them.

So, C, you're saying that the chickens made pigs of themselves? ;-)

That, too, DC.

Chickens are "barnyard buzzards".

It's just another sad indicator of how out of touch with nature people are.

I always enjoyed explaining to city kids where on the chicken eggs come from.

So true! Guess that's why they are called barnyard buzzards. Sometimes I have to leave off eggs for a while after seeing the hens with a frog or a mouse.

As I've often stated; "Anyone who thinks pigs can't fly has never kept chickens!" ...Chickens will eat mice. Chickens will eat other chickens... Chickens will eat ANYTHING.

There seems to be a general consensus here! - lol

We have Guineas for the purpose of eating grasshoppers and other things that want to eat the garden. Their eggs are smaller than chickens, but just as good. What I think is gross is the way the feed lots feed chicken manure and dead animals from the animal shelters to cattle.

I have seen one of my hens nail a fly on a post after just looking at it once. They will (and do) eat anything!

I'm with you, UO, Cows are SUPPOSED to be vegetarians.

Sure enough, BC.

You're welcome, wh.

Whenever we got a critter hunting, after we processed all the meat, we would put the bones/carcass in the coop for the hens to clean up. They loved it!

And the protein is good for them, LL.
