From A Reader

 -

"Southern California used to have what was called "The Red Line;" a light rail trolley system that could take people to just about any city or town in the area at speeds in excess of 70MPH. ...GM bought The Red Line, promptly dismantled it, and replaced it with diesel buses! Los Angeles also had an elevated bicycle toll road. People could pay a penny to use the thing to cross town in a fraction of the time it took on the surface streets. It was bought and promptly dismantled... by the railroad!"
